Gardens from Around the World

Course

“What does a child in South America have for breakfast? And in Africa?” “What is the country of origin of the tomato we ate for lunch?” “What vegetables do we find in other countries around the world?”

During this project, we will find the answers to these and other questions about the origin of foods, their history and evolution, and the traditions of people who have lived in harmony with Mother Earth for centuries.

Between exuberantly shaped potatoes and surprisingly colored corn kernels, we will embark on a journey around the world. We will discover that seeds and plants, like people, have always undertaken long journeys, even crossing oceans to reach us.

The sessions will follow a hypothetical “journey” to various parts of the world. For each stage, we will discuss different crops in various corners of the globe and then create “mini-gardens,” each representing a continent.

During the winter months, classroom educational activities are planned, including themed crafts, storytelling of farming stories and traditions from around the world, and the preparation of natural fertilizers to nourish our garden.

At the end of the sessions, there will be an outing to Cascina Selvetto where children can see a real farm and apply what they have learned throughout the year.
